For Rick Hetzel, serving the Cape Girardeau community has always been a way of life. Many of you may know him as our former Chief of Police or from his business initiatives in real estate or the sports industries.
Rick learned that nothing is more important than feeling safe and secure in your own home. He launched American Handyman of Cape Girardeau to solve a problem he saw growing in our area: how hard it is to find a reliable professional willing to take on those smaller home repairs. Rick wanted to build a company that families could truly trust—providing vetted, professional craftsmen you can feel comfortable having around your children and pets.
Rick sees American Handyman as the next step in his commitment to total wellness. As the owner of Fresh Healthy Café, he has spent years helping our community fuel their bodies; now, he wants to help you take care of your environment. He believes that true wellness is holistic—it isn't just about healthy eating, but also about living in a home that is safe, functional, and stress-free.

Brad Hughes
With nearly three decades of hands-on experience in the trades, Brad Hughes brings a rare depth of technical knowledge to his role as General Manager of American Handyman of Cape Girardeau.
His career began with intensive training in electrical trades at Mid America AVTS, specializing in complex residential, commercial, and industrial wiring.
This rigorous technical start paved the way for eight years of field-applied electrical work and four years dedicated to high-precision.
A Legacy of Craftsmanship.
Before joining American Handyman, Brad spent 16 years as the owner and operator of American Independent Contractors. During this time, he became a master of "whole-home" care—managing everything from roofing and siding to intricate kitchen and bathroom remodels.
Whether it’s the structural integrity of a new installation or the fine detail of tile and trim work, Brad’s diverse skillset ensures that every project is handled with expert oversight.
A resident of Cape Girardeau for 25 years, Brad is more than just a manager; he is a dedicated member of the community. His leadership at American Handyman is guided by a simple, unwavering philosophy: A job is never truly finished until the customer is 100% satisfied.
